Trump’s crackdown on migrants shows his tyranny

In final months of the Biden administration, migrant crossings over the U.S.-Mexico border had reached their lowest levels since 2020. However, President Donald Trump pledged to make cracking down on immigration a key issue in his second term. He already enacted a range of new executive policies intended to ramp up arrests and deportations of undocumented persons nationwide. Some of those policies, like permitting ICE agents to enter schools and churches, have met immediate resistance from state and local governments.

ICE said it arrested over 5,500 individuals in the first week of Trump’s second term, but those mass arrests have also swept up legal non-citizens, Native Americans and even full U.S. citizens, leaving many communities in fear regardless of their immigration status.

Watch the above video as Straight Arrow News contributor Ruben Navarrette dives into why he says President Trump is making immigration into a much larger issue than it actually is, and why he says all Americans should be ashamed of his behavior.

The following is an excerpt from the above video:

In Trump’s world, straight white men are constantly being victimized by, take your pick, wokeism, immigration, globalization, racial preferences, multiculturalism, people of color, etc. But not to worry, Trump has come to liberate you and to help you get even with everyone and everything that ever wronged you, real or imagined. As Trump used to say to supporters on the campaign trail, he is your retribution.

That explains the flurry of executive orders and about-faces in policy, but Trump is moving too quickly and applying too much brute force. He’s ruling like a tyrant, not an elected leader of a constitutional republic, and as a result, he’s making mistakes and overstepping.

Right-wing trolls will say that the reason I’m so upset about Trump’s defacement of our country’s laws and traditions is that I’m Mexican American. They’re half right. The Mexican part isn’t happy at once again being treated like a piano, that’s for sure. But it’s the American half that’s really pissed at Trump’s petulant tantrums and the havoc they wreck. See, if you love America, you ought to hate the way that the Mad King is defacing it.

My My Donald Trump has been awfully busy in his first two weeks in office. The 47th and 45th president has sliced through tradition, protocol and precedent, like a hurricane leveling the Gulf Coast. If I had to choose three words to describe the first two weeks of Donald Trump’s second presidential term, they would be dizzying, disturbing and draining. My head is spinning and My blood is boiling. I’m sure not the only American suffering from those conditions. It’s not unheard of for elected officials to generate some degree of chaos in the name of making monumental and necessary changes or fixing societal problems. That’s understandable. The status quo does not often bend without a fight, but in the process of breaking dishes, those elected leaders have to make sure that they don’t also damage the National Comity that’s C, O, M, I, T, Y, that binds together the American people in a shared purpose. The dictionary defines comedy as, quote, courteous and considerate behavior toward others, think of it as getting along through kindness, respect, empathy or civility, win or lose. America’s leaders should always treat people with dignity and compassion, especially the weak and the vulnerable. Perhaps the glue that holds together such a diverse tribe of misfits in this fabled land of second chances is the recognition that we have more in common than that which divides us. Or maybe it’s simply an appeal to decency and adherence to the biblical admonition to treat others as we want to be treated. Or perhaps it’s the recognition that we have obstacles to overcome, and so we should not be so quick to judge each other. The idea of treating people with dignity, however, is foreign to Trump. Much of what he’s been doing since he was sworn in on January 20, and the speed with which he’s been doing it is about stripping people of their dignity. Trump is piling on, preying on the defenseless, and picking fights with the whole world. And what do you know? Surprise, surprise. Same as always, the people who Trump is most eager to fight, well, they have brown skin. There is the likely unconstitutional assault on the 14th Amendment’s promise of birthright citizenship, which will probably have a disproportionate impact on migrants from Latin America. Then came the rollback of programs fostering diversity, equity Equity and Inclusion dei and the freezing of all Justice Department cases alleging civil rights violations, then Mexican cartels were designated a terrorist group, and US troops were sent to the US Mexico border to help the Border Patrol keep out immigrants. Trump even reached into the history books to rescind Executive Order, 11246, which President Lyndon Johnson signed in 1965 to prevent racial discrimination by the federal government or businesses that get federal contracts. You see, if you’re a straight white male and you think of yourself as a victim of unfair policies that kept you out of Princeton and denied you a cushy government job. Well, Trump is the president for you.
