Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the Justice Department (DOJ) is suing Chicago, along with the states of Illinois and New York, as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants and jurisdictions that restrict cooperation between federal immigration agents and local police. President Donald Trump has frequently criticized Chicago and Illinois for having some of the nation’s strongest protections for immigrants. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, meanwhile, shared his belief that President Trump’s policies pose serious risks to Americans’ civil rights and democracy at large, and pledged to continue speaking out.

In New York, Bondi pointed to the state’s “Green Light Law,” which allows migrants living in the country illegally to obtain driver’s licenses. Bondi warned that the Justice Department is prepared to take action against other states it believes are not complying with federal law.

Watch the above video as Straight Arrow News contributor Star Parker applauds Bondi’s crackdowns on sanctuary cities and states, arguing that “officials at every level must get their priorities straight” and protect the American people from “violent criminal aliens.”

The following is an excerpt from the above video:

When local governments protect violent criminal aliens from arrest and deportation, they put vulnerable people in their communities at risk. There is also a national interest in arresting these criminals because they sometimes cross state lines and commit serious crimes in other parts of the country.

During her announcement, Bondi shared the story of 20-year-old Kayla Hamilton, who was raped and murdered by an MS-13 gang member from El Salvador. The gang member was smuggled into the United States, apprehended by Border Patrol agents in Texas and flown to Maryland to live with a sponsor.

“Her murderer was only living there for five days before he viciously strangled her, raped her and left her on the floor like trash and robbed her of $6,” Kayla’s mother said.

The first legislation President Trump signed into law on Jan. 29 is the Laken Riley Act. This law mandates the federal detention of illegal immigrants who are accused of theft, burglary, assaulting a law enforcement officer, or any crime that causes death or serious bodily injury.

Attorney General Pam Bondi is not wasting time in acting on President Trump’s promise to crack down on sanctuary cities and states that harbor illegal aliens and impede federal efforts to enforce immigration law. Bondi has announced that the Justice Department (DOJ) is suing the City of Chicago, the State of Illinois and the State of New York over their sanctuary city and state policies.

DOJ’s complaint against the Chicago and Illinois governments says their local laws are “designed to and in fact interfere with and discriminate against the Federal Government’s enforcement of federal immigration law in violation of the Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution.”

Trump and Bondi recognize that the first obligation of every government official is to protect the American people. When local governments protect violent criminal aliens from arrest and deportation, they put vulnerable people in their communities at risk. There is also a national interest in arresting these criminals because they sometimes cross state lines and commit serious crimes in other parts of the country.

The first legislation President Trump signed into law on January 29th is the Laken Riley Act. This law mandates the federal detention of illegal immigrants who are accused of theft, burglary, assaulting a law enforcement officer, or any crime that causes death or serious bodily injury.

The Laken Riley Act is named after a Georgia nursing student who was killed by a Venezuelan alien who was previously arrested and paroled into the United States under the Biden administration.

On February 12th, Attorney General Bondi announced that the Justice Department is suing the Governor of New York, the State Attorney General and the Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner, claiming they are prioritizing “illegal aliens over American citizens.” Bondi laid down the gauntlet saying, “This is a new DOJ. New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. It stops. It stops today,” she said. d

Distressed communities across America need more economic investment but those communities and their people need to be safe. President Trump and Pam Bondi recognize that these objectives are inextricably linked. It’s time for officials at every level of government to get their priorities straight.
