Anti-Trumpers care about power, not democracy

News commentators across the political spectrum — including some contributors here at Straight Arrow News — have warned Americans about Donald Trump’s aspirations to make himself a dictator and effectively end the American republic if he regains power in November. Their warnings cite Trump’s own legal arguments, public statements and past behavior, including the attempted coup that culminated in a deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Americans who viewed Donald Trump as an existential threat to democracy and America rallied around these shared concerns to help mobilize a historic turnout in the 2020 U.S. elections and put Democrats back in power.

Watch the above video as Straight Arrow News contributor Ben Weingarten says that these Americans don’t actually care about democracy, and insists instead that what they really care about is power.

The following is an excerpt of the above video:

This self-styled group of democracy-defenders is laboring months in advance of a Trump presidency to disenfranchise his voters, fearing that perpetual efforts to smear him in the media, slander, silence, and threaten his supporters with lawfare and weaponized government agencies, and get the man thrown off the ballot, break, bankrupt, silence, and jail him are failing.

It’s self-evident they don’t care one iota for democracy. As always, they care about protecting their favored agenda which redounds to their benefit. Donald Trump in office means less power and privilege for his foes. And they simply can’t abide it.

We are told “the early timing, volume and scale of the planning underway to push back against a potential second Trump administration are without precedent.”

That’s because they fear this time the Trump administration will be better prepared to execute its agenda.

Dr. Rashad Richey: Democracy is on the ballot this November.

Jordan Reid: Donald Trump isn’t joking when he says he wants people killed.

After the 2016 election we had The Resistance.

In the run-up to the 2020 election we had the “shadow campaign” to “save” it – described by Time as a “well-funded cabal of powerful people, ranging across industries and ideologies, working together behind the scenes to influence perceptions, change rules and laws, steer media coverage and control the flow of information,” “fortifying” the election, “not…rigging” it.

Today we have a new chapter in the annals of the never-ending saga to bring down Donald Trump, and with it, undermine the will of tens of millions of Americans who might make him president once again. According to the New York Times:

A sprawling network of Democratic officials, progressive activists, watchdog groups and ex-Republicans has been taking extraordinary steps to prepare for a potential second Trump presidency, drawn together by the fear that Mr. Trump’s return to power would pose a grave threat not just to their agenda but to American democracy itself.

That’s because, they fear this time the Trump administration will be better prepared to execute its agenda.

The New York Times fear-mongers about a Trump Justice Department that might actually hold the Lawfare Inquisitionists liable for their abuse of the rule of law in a bid to restore it; to freeze illegal immigration and remove illegal aliens – something supported by half of Americans including 42% of Democrats; and to ensure the administrative state serves the people who elected their boss, the commander in chief, rather than sabotaging and subverting him to protect their progressive fiefdoms.

These policy moves branded as “authoritarian” by the Times are designed to restore a perhaps irrevocably damaged justice system, sovereignty, and representative government.

And they, and Trump, are popular precisely because The Resistance has left America less safe and less prosperous than the country was before the Biden administration came into office.

Never mind, says The Resistance. Rather than actually represent the American people by listening to their concerns and devising a policy agenda that meets them to win, the Times says the largely leftist anti-Trump lawyers and activists are resorting to using regulatory power, and planning and plotting to engage in massive lawfare, and exert state power to stymie a future Trump agenda.

These are not the actions of people who believe in democracy.

They are the actions of people willing to bring the republic to its knees if they do not get the government they want.

The threat of the chaos they are pledging to unleash may be part of the point – to publicize their efforts as a means of getting Americans to submit and not vote Trump to “make the pain go away” of the constant hysteria and controversy The Resistance two-point-oh will gin up to hamstring a future Trump administration.

Americans of all political stripes should summarily reject the anti-democratic actions of those arguably executing the very authoritarian acts they accuse their political opponents of to protect and preserve their power.
