Senate Democrats push plan to abolish Electoral College

Senate Democrats introduced a constitutional amendment on Monday, Dec. 16, to abolish the Electoral College. The proposal comes after President-elect Donald Trump won all battleground states during last month’s election, and seeks to change how the nation’s leaders are elected.

The Electoral College has faced debate over its fairness and relevance. Advocates for the bill argue that the Electoral College is an outdated system. Democrats believe that a popular vote would enhance democracy.

“In an election, the person who gets the most votes should win. It’s that simple,” Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said. “No one’s vote should count for more based on where they live. The Electoral College is outdated and it’s undemocratic. It’s time to end it.”
