NC Republicans override veto, stripping governor’s powers

North Carolina Republicans have overridden outgoing Gov. Roy Cooper’s, D, veto of the bill stripping the governor’s powers. This legislation limits the governor’s ability to make unilateral decisions on various matters.
Critics argue that the law undermines the governor’s ability to respond effectively to crises. The vote came to 72-46 in the Republican-dominated House, with over 100 people gathering to “shame” the vote. Overriding vetoes won’t be possible much longer in North Carolina, as Democrats picked up just enough seats to prevent overrides in the 2024 election.
