NASA finds global sea level rose faster than expected last year

In 2024, global sea levels rose by 0.23 inches, exceeding the expected increase of 0.17 inches, according to a NASA analysis. The study revealed that thermal expansion now accounts for two-thirds of sea level rise, reversing historical trends where two-thirds was due to melting ice and rivers.

Scientists warn that rising sea levels can lead to more severe storm surges and ecosystem disruption, as noted by the National Weather Service. Josh Willis from NASA reported that the rate of sea level rise is increasing, making concerns about coastal impacts more urgent.
