Fox News loses bid for Smartmatic voting-tech company’s records about Philippines bribery case

A judge ruled that Smartmatic doesn’t have to provide Fox News with records regarding alleged bribery in the Philippines involving its co-founder. Fox News sought the information to aid in defending against Smartmatic’s $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit related to the 2020 presidential election broadcasts.

Smartmatic’s co-founder, Roger Piñate, was indicted along with two other executives for allegedly paying over $1 million in bribes to a Filipino election official.

The company was never charged in the case and put Piñate on leave after he was charged.
