Denmark has confirmed that Greenland is not for sale. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede said, “We are not for sale and will never be for sale.” Donald Trump Jr. landed in Greenland’s capital on Tuesday, Jan. 7, though he says he is only in the country as a tourist.
The prime minister’s comment comes at a time when President-Elect Donald Trump is arguing that the U.S. should buy Greenland, citing national security concerns. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, with local governance established under the Self-Government Act of 2009. Denmark announced new defense spending of about $1.5 billion for Greenland, which was planned prior to Trump’s recent comments.
