The Texas woman convicted of killing Latin pop star Selena in 1995 is filing for parole. Yolanda Saldívar, 63, has her first opportunity to file for parole this year after serving 30 years of her life sentence in prison.
Saldívar shot and killed 23-year-old Selena Quintanilla-Pérez after a falling out with the singer. Saldívar had lost her role as the manager of a series of Selena’s boutiques and president of her fan club. Selena’s family members found evidence Saldívar was embezzling money from the boutiques and fan club.
Saldívar has repeatedly denied intentionally killing Selena, including in a 2024 documentary on the Oxygen network.
The parole review process for Saldívar began on Oct. 30. In the process, the parole board will interview her and review her case file and prison conduct. The vote will occur on March 30.
While Texas data revealed that in fiscal year 2022, the parole board approved nearly 40% of all parole requests, a parole attorney told local news station KSAT that the odds for a first-time parole candidate like Saldívar are much lower.
