A WASHINGTON STATE MAN IS HEADING TO PRISON FOR NEARLY FOUR YEARS AFTER ADMITTING TO A BLACK-MARKET SCHEME THAT KILLED AND SOLD HUNDREDS OF PROTECTED EAGLES AND HAWKS ON MONTANA’S FLATHEAD INDIAN RESERVATION.
49-YEAR-OLD TRAVIS JOHN BRANSON,WILL ALSO HAVE TO PAY OVER $770,000 IN RESTITUTION. PROSECUTORS SAY BRANSON TRAVELED REPEATEDLY FROM WASHINGTON TO MONTANA BETWEEN 2015 AND 2021, WHERE HE AND A NOW-FUGITIVE ACCOMPLICE, SIMON PAUL, WENT ON WHAT THEY CALLED “KILLING SPREES,” TARGETING BALD AND GOLDEN EAGLES, ALONG WITH HAWKS. BRANSON PLEADED GUILTY EARLIER THIS YEAR TO TRAFFICKING CHARGES.
THE U.S. ATTORNEY’S OFFICE ESTIMATES THAT BRANSON WAS INVOLVED IN THE DEATHS OF 3,600 BIRDS, INCLUDING 118 BALD AND GOLD EAGLES AND 107 HAWKS DIRECTLY LINKED TO HIM. IN TEXT MESSAGES, BRANSON REPORTEDLY JOKED ABOUT THE LOW COST OF BULLETS USED TO KILL THESE BIRDS WHILE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE HIGH DEMAND FOR EAGLE FEATHERS IN CERTAIN NATIVE AMERICAN CEREMONIES.

“Feathers have been used to signify the strength of a warrior, what he can do, what he cannot do, what he can accomplish. And some of the feathers are also sacred. Sacred in terms of using in the way of ceremonial, healing, powwows and other traditional events that occur within an Indian group.”

THIS CASE SPOTLIGHTS THE GROWING BLACK-MARKET DEMAND FOR EAGLE FEATHERS, AN ISSUE MADE WORSE BY BACKLOGS IN THE LEGAL FEATHER DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM RUN BY THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE.
THAT BACKLOG MEANS SOME FEATHERS ARE HARDER FOR TRIBAL MEMBERS TO ACCESS LEGALLY, AND AUTHORITIES SAY ILLEGAL POACHING FILLS THAT GAP.
THE TRIBES ON THE FLATHEAD RESERVATION SAY THIS LOSS HAS A PROFOUND IMPACT, NOT ONLY ON THE ECOSYSTEM BUT ON THEIR CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL HERITAGE. EAGLES ARE SACRED IN TRIBAL PRACTICES, AND THE EFFECTS OF THESE LOSSES WILL BE FELT FOR YEARS.
