The Vancouver International Auto Show removed Tesla over safety issues as the Elon Musk-led company deals with worldwide protests and vandalism.
A spokesperson for the event, which began Wednesday, March 19, said it decided to exclude Tesla following “multiple opportunities to voluntarily withdraw” from the event. The spokesperson added its primary concern is the safety of workers, attendees and exhibitors.
How has Canada been involved in Tesla protests?
Tesla has been the target of many so-called “Tesla Takedown” protests in several cities including Ottawa and Vancouver, criticizing Musk and his role advising President Donald Trump.
Trump implemented tariffs on Canadian goods and repeatedly mentioned making Canada the 51st U.S. state.
Musk made several remarks about Canada in the past, including in a since-removed post to X in February 2025.
He wrote, “Canada is not a real country,” after hundreds of thousands of Canadians signed a petition urging the government to revoke his dual citizenship.
Although Musk was born in South Africa, he received a Canadian passport as a teenager through his mother who was born in Canada.
On March 12, British Columbia Hydro banned Tesla products from its electric vehicle rebate program as part of the provincial government’s move to give preference to Canadian goods and exclude U.S. ones from rebates amid the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade war.
Musk called the move “crazy.”
