THEY SERVE AS FLYING COMMAND POSTS, DESIGNED TO BE USED IN THE EVENT OF A NUCLEAR ATTACK ON THE UNITED STATES.
SIERRA NEVADA’S 13 BILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT WILL SEE THE ENTIRE FLEET OF E-4B NIGHTWATCH AIRCRAFT REPLACED BY 2036.
THE CURRENT NIGHTWATCH FLEET HAS BEEN ON HIGH-ALERT SINCE THE 70s…THE PLANES THEMSELVES STARTED FLYING IN THE 80s
THESE BOEING 747-200 AIRCRAFT CAN CARRY MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE…WHICH WOULD LIKELY INCLUDE FOLKS LIKE THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE IN THE EVENT OF A NATIONAL EMERGENCY.
THEY’RE EQUIPPED WITH A ROBUST COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM.
JUST ABOVE THE COCKPIT IS THE “SURVIVABLE SUPER HIGH FREQUENCY SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS ANTENNA”…WHICH KEEPS THE SECRETARY IN TOUCH WITH THE PRESIDENT ON AIR FORCE ONE.
INSIDE, THE CABIN IS DIVIDED INTO SEVERAL AREAS.
INCLUDING A COMMAND ROOM, BRIEFING ROOM, COMMUNICATIONS ROOM, AND, OF COURSE, A REST AREA.
AS I SAID EARLIER–THE HIGH-TECH AIRCRAFT ARE DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND THE EFFECTS FROM A NUCLEAR BLAST…. AND CAN STAY IN THE AIR FOR 72 HOURS–AS LONG AS IT GETS SOME MID AIR REFUELS.
SIERRA NEVADA WILL CONVERT FIVE BOEING 747-8S INTO THESE “FLYING CASTLES”, AS SOME ANALYSTS CALL THEM. THE COMPANY BOUGHT THE PLANES FROM KOREAN AIR FOR A MEASLEY 675 MILLION DOLLARS. WORK IS SCHEDULED TO START NEXT YEAR.
THE AIR FORCE SAYS THE NEW NIGHTWATCHERS WILL KEEP ALL THE CRUCIAL FEATURES OF THE CURRENT FLEET AND FIX GAPS IN SOME OF THE TECHNOLOGY.
OF COURSE THE USAF ISN’T EXACTLY EXPOUNDING ON WHAT THOSE CRUCIAL FEATURES ARE…OR WHAT GAPS NEED FILLED–SOMETHING ABOUT NATIONAL SECURITY AND NOT WANTING TO TIP THEIR HAND TO THE ENEMY.
