US air support to Ukraine; Israel/Lebanon border deal; LIV golfer cashes in

President Joe Biden told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the United States would provide Ukraine with “advanced air defense systems;” Israel and Lebanon reached an historic maritime border deal; and a top LIV golfer has already topped $30 million in winnings in just six tournaments. These stories highlight the Daily Rundown for Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022.

Air defense systems to Ukraine – In a phone call Monday, President Biden told President Zelenskyy the U.S. agreed to his request to provide advanced air defense systems. The phone call came just hours after Russia unleashed its most widespread strikes against Ukraine in months.

“[Biden]  expressed his condemnation of Russia’s missile strikes across Ukraine, including in Kyiv, and conveyed his condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured in these senseless attacks,” the White House said in a readout of the call. “He also underscored his ongoing engagement with allies and partners to continue imposing costs on Russia, holding Russia accountable for its war crimes and atrocities, and providing Ukraine with security, economic, and humanitarian assistance.”

Israel, Lebanon reach border deal – Israel’s prime minister said Tuesday that the country has reached a “historic agreement” with neighboring Lebanon over their shared maritime border. At stake are rights over exploiting undersea natural gas reserves in areas of the eastern Mediterranean that the two countries claim.

The agreement is expected to enable additional natural gas production in the Mediterranean. Lebanon hopes gas exploration will help lift its country out of its spiraling economic crisis.

Lebanon and Israel have been officially at war since Israel’s creation in 1948. Negotiations were brokered by senior U.S. energy envoy Amos Hochstrein.

LIV golfer reaches $30 million in winnings – Just six tournaments into his time with the Saudi-backed golf upstart LIV Golf, Dustin Johnson has already amassed $30 million in winnings. This includes $12,758,600 in individual event winnings and an $18 million bonus for winning the season points title.

While a handful of notable players have jumped ship from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf, Johnson might be the biggest name to do so. He held the No. 1 ranking longer than any other player since Tiger Woods and had said in February he would stick with the PGA Tour until changing his mind in June.
