A DECISION STILL HANGS IN THE AIR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN…FOLLOWINGSTUDENT PROTESTS TO KEEP D-E-I PROGRAM ON CAMPUS.
THE BOARD OF REGENTS MET ONE FINAL TIME ON THURSDAY…LEAVING THE DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION PROGRAM UNTOUCHED. STATING “THERE ARE NO PLANS TO MAKE ANY CUTS TO THESE PROGRAMS.”
HOWEVER BOARD MEMBERS DID VOTE TO REMOVE THE REQUIREMENT FOR DIVERSITY STATEMENTS FROM FACULTY WHO ARE UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR A JOB OR PROMOTION.
ESSENTIALLY CANDIDATES WILL NO LONGER PROVIDE AN OUTLINE ON HOW THEY WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DEI PROGRAMS ON MICHIGAN’S CAMPUS.
THE CHANGE MIRRORS OTHER UNIVERSITIES LIKE M-I-T AND HARVARD MAKING SIMILAR ELIMINATIONS IN RECENT MONTHS.
THE UNIVERSITY’S PROVOST SAID A COMMITTEE SPENT MONTHS WEIGHING PROS AND CONS OF DIVERSITY STATEMENTS…ASKING THOSE ON CAMPUS FOR FEEDBACK ABOUT THEIR USEFULNESS. NOTING THE UNIVERSITY’S DEI PROGRAM HAS QUOTE “PRODUCED IMPORTANT STRIDES IN OPENING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE.”
MICHIGAN’S REGENTS ARE STILL MEASURING OTHER DEI INITIATIVES AFTER A NEW YORK TIMES REPORT DETAILED THE UNIVERSITY HAS SPENT TWO-HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS SINCE 2016 ON DIVERSITY…DESPITE BLACK STUDENT ENROLLMENT SITTING AROUND FIVE PERCENT FOR THE LAST DECADE.
THE TIMES INVESTIGATION FOUND 56 PERCENT OF FUNDING GOES TO THE DEI STAFF THROUGH SALARIES AND BENEFITS.
THE BOARD IS REPORTEDLY REFINING THEIR APPROACH…THE FACULTY SENATE RELEASED A LETTER IN NOVEMBER SAYING THE REGENTS MET BEHIND CLOSED DOORS ON THE POSSIBILITY OF DEFUNDING DEI IN THE NEXT BUDGET YEAR.
CONCERN QUICKLY AROSE FROM STAFF THAT STUDENTS AND FACULTY COULD BE NEGATIVELY IMPACTED AND MICHIGAN’S CORE VALUES WOULD BE CHANGED.
THE LETTER ALSO ASSERTS THAT PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP’S PROMISES TO CRACKDOWN ON DEI PROGRAMS IS SPARKING FEAR ACROSS THE BOARD OF REGENTS.
THE TALKS REACHED THE STUDENT BODY…SPURRING A RALLY EARLIER THIS WEEK AS WELL ASPLEAS DIRECTLY TO THE REGENTS DURING THE MEETING.
ONE STUDENT SPOKE OUT SAYING, “Many have DEI completely wrong, instilling terror and fear for a reason I must attribute to ignorance at best, malice at worst.”
WHILE A PHYSICS PROFESSOR SAID ALL DEI PROGRAMS SHOULD BE ELIMINATED…SAYINGTHEIR DISCRIMINATORY.
THE BOARD ALSO RAISED HOUSEHOLD INCOME REQUIREMENTS TO ALLOW MORE STUDENTS TO ATTEND THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN TUITION FREE…INCREASING THE THRESHOLD BY 67 PERCENT.
