Ukraine pushes Russia back; chip export ban; 74th Emmy Awards

On Sept. 12, 2022, Ukraine pushes Russia back to its border in one region previously overtaken by Russian forces, Biden will enforce a ban on semiconductor chip exports to China next month, and the 74th Emmy Awards will air tonight returning to its typical Los Angeles venue after two years of pandemic adjustments.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive momentum – Ukraine kept the counteroffensive momentum moving Monday. Officials said its military has taken back one village after another following Russia’s collapse in northeast Ukraine. In one region, Ukraine said it pushed Russian troops all the way to the border between the two countries. It has been seen as a lightning military move that stunned many. Russia has acknowledged these developments and said it is regrouping.

Biden ban on semiconductor shipments to China – According to Reuters, the Biden Administration is planning to broaden its curbs on semiconductor exports to China next month. The Commerce Department has sent letters to three U.S. companies forbidding them from exporting chip-making equipment to Chinese factories unless the sellers obtain Commerce Department licenses. Two other companies were asked to halt shipments of certain chips to China.

A spokesperson for the Commerce Department on Friday declined to comment on specific regulations but reiterated that it is “taking a comprehensive approach to implement additional actions … to protect U.S. national security and foreign policy interests,” including to keep China from acquiring U.S. technology applicable to military modernization.

74th Emmy Awards tonight – The 74th Emmy Awards is set to take place from the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles Monday evening. The event will be hosted by “Saturday Night Live” comedian Kenan Thompson and will resume at its typical venue after two years of pandemic-era adjustments. In the wake of production delays from COVID-19 restrictions that were eventually lifted, there was a notable increase in the number of contenders submitted for Emmys consideration in 2022, according to Variety, making for a particularly competitive awards show tonight.
