Meanwhile, over 13,000 people have been detained for what the Taliban describes as “immoral acts” in the past year. The push is backed by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.
Taliban leadership is aiming to push society to align with their interpretation of Islamic law. That means new mandates like requiring women to completely veil their bodies, including their faces, in public spaces.
The ministry also now requires a woman’s voice should not be heard in public as well. This has effectively banned singing and reading aloud in public, because a woman’s voice has been deemed intimate.
Along with singing, more than 21,000 musical instruments have been seized and destroyed over the last year. Computer operations selling anything the government considers “immoral” are also targeted.
Despite international outcry, the Taliban remains committed to enforcing their interpretation of Islamic law.
