On Sept. 28, 2022, the first federal lawsuit has been filed against President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan; North Korea fires missiles in a show against Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to South Korea; and the president is set to unveil a plan to end hunger in the U.S. by 2030.

Student loan forgiveness plan’s first legal battle – A libertarian group in California filed a lawsuit against Biden’s plan to forgive $10,000 to $20,000 of student debt for people making less than $125,000 a year. The group called the plan an example of illegal overreach that would increase state tax burdens for some Americans. In six states, debt forgiven under the plan would be subject to state taxes. When asked about the suit, the White House said anyone would be able to opt out of debt cancellation. It was not explained how this would work for the roughly 8 million Americans who automatically get the debt relief. The lawsuit comes as the White House plans to make loan forgiveness applications available next month.

North Korea fires missile ahead of Harris trip – North Korea fired off another ballistic missile Wednesday. The launch came the day before Vice President Kamala Harris is set to arrive in South Korea to meet with the country’s president and other officials. U.S. and South Korean ships are also in the middle of conducting drills off South Korea’s east coast meant to be a show of force against the north.

Biden’s conference to end U.S. hunger – The White House is hosting a conference on hunger, nutrition and health. It’s the first such White House conference since 1969. The focus of the conference is Biden’s goal of ending hunger in the U.S. by 2030. Ahead of the conference, the White House released a list of more than $8 billion in commitments to the cause from private companies, charitable foundations and industry groups.
