Spanish beachgoers swarmed a wrecked boat to steal marijuana. The boat belonged to a suspected drug-trafficker.
Video of the event, which happened on July 29, went viral. The scene was captured from several angles and shows a beached-boat surrounded by people. The crowd can be seen entering the boat and fleeing with the contraband.
Spanish Customs officers said the boat belonged to a drug-trafficker and was hauling hashish, a form of marijuana.
Before police could secure the scene, locals in the area caught wind of the boat’s contents and started stealing the stash. Hashtag: What would you do for a hashish bar?
Police tried using a helicopter to scare off the crowd, flying extremely low at times, but not even spinning blades or the threat of arrest would stop some of the more determined hash-heads.
Spanish police said the operation in question is ongoing. There is still no word on how much hash was on the boat when it crashed, or how much was left after it was looted.
Marijuana use is quasi-legal in Spain. Private possession is decriminalized. It can be can consumed at certain clubs around the country, but importing marijuana to Spain is still a crime, punishable by jail time and a fine.
