
Russia claims warplanes intercepted 2 US bombers in the Arctic

Russia said two of its warplanes intercepted two U.S. military bombers that got near the Russian border over the Barents Sea in the Arctic. Russia’s Defense Ministry said its military identified the U.S. planes as B-52H strategic bombers.

The U.S. military often carries out flights over international waters. Military officials said pilots fly in neutral airspace and in accordance with international law. Russia has been responding more aggressively to the exercises in recent months.
In June, Moscow warned U.S. drone flights over the Black Sea could lead to a “direct” military clash. Russian officials also accused the U.S. of using the drones to help Ukraine in the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula.
