In an historic step towards defending national security from China, Axios reported the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to ban all sales of new Huawei and ZTE telecommunications devices in the U.S. Citing “sources with direct knowledge of the private deliberations.” Axios also reported the FCC will ban some sales of video surveillance equipment from three other Chinese firms.

The move marks the first time the FCC has banned electronics equipment on national security grounds. The FCC previously prohibited companies from using federal funding to purchase equipment from these firms, but the new order would extend this ban to all purchases.

The move comes as security researchers, analysts and intelligence agencies warn the Chinese government could use Chinese-made telecommunications equipment to spy on Americans. Congressional officials have recommended that members of Congress not download or use the popular social media app TikTok, and a recent Pentagon report found federally funded research companies in the U.S. are being bought out by China.

The reporting of the FCC ban on Huawei and ZTE telecommunications devices comes as the Biden administration unveiled its national security strategy vision. The strategy aims to check an ascendant China and a more assertive Russia, naming China as America’s greatest threat.

“What this strategy does, rather than provide an extensive accounting of every single challenge or opportunity America faces, it really touches on our plans in every region of the world and outlines how we will seize what it calls a decisive decade to advance our vital interests,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said during his daily briefing Wednesday.

China responded to the strategy Thursday, calling on the U.S. to uphold the principle of “mutual respect” and work with China to bring back relations to “a healthy and stable track.”

“We oppose clinging to an outdated concept such as the Cold War thinking and zero-sum mentality, and we also disapprove of sensationalizing geopolitical conflicts and great power competition, which run counter to the current trend of the times and the expectations of the international community,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said. “Such acts will gain no support and are doomed to failure.”
