Inflation is soaring and consumer prices are up on pretty much everything. But here are five things actually cheaper today.
#5: Frankfurters
Most meat has been way more expensive of late, so it’s surprising that hot dogs are down 3.3% from last year. But get them while the deal is hot because packaged meat suppliers say they’re raising prices in January.
#4: Airline fares
Airline tickets are down 4.6% from last year, a product of airfare tanking with the pandemic. While holiday bookings are reportedly strong right now, business travelers are still not back, so demand and prices are still relatively low.
#3: Sewing supplies
Sewing machines, fabric and supplies to make clothes are down 5.7% year over year. With apparel prices up across the board, now might be the perfect time to start making your own clothes.
#2: Health insurance
Health insurance prices are down 6.4% from last year. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, more Americans than ever now qualify for federal subsidies that’ll reduce what they spend on health insurance in 2022, including millions who are self employed.
#1: Smartphones
Smartphones have seen a staggering price decline, down 20.6% from last year. Carriers have launched big promotions on trade-ins and unlimited plans, competing hard for new customers and making smartphones cheaper (if they’re in stock).
