According to a new poll, 44% of people between the ages of 25-34 say that referring to someone by the wrong gender pronoun should be a criminal offense. Meanwhile, only 31% of millennials disagree. The remainder of those who were polled answered “neither agree nor disagree” or “don’t know.”

According to Pew Research Center, a millennial is someone between the ages of 27-42 But the view on pronouns also remains popular with those between the ages of 35-44.

The Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey for Newsweek polled 1,500 eligible voters in the United States, including Generation Z Americans aged 18-24.

Among all age categories that contain millennials, more people think misgendering should be illegal than legal. But notably Generation Z Americans are less keen on making misgendering a crime than older millennials

The survey also found that more Americans would refer to transgender men and women by their requested pronouns than those who would refuse to do so.
