Russell Brand has been charged with rape and sexual assault in the United Kingdom. Now, the actor could also face legal action in the United States.
According to the Metropolitan Police, Brand faces five charges involving four different women. These charges include one count of rape, one count of oral rape, one count of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault.
Brand is scheduled to appear in court on May 2.
Just hours after authorities announced the charges, the actor posted a video on social media addressing the allegations. In the post, he denied wrongdoing and described his past behavior as reckless but insisted, “What I never was, was a rapist.”
Russell Brand’s charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred between 1999 and 2005. However, the actor’s legal troubles may not stop in the U.K.
U.S. civil case and possible criminal charges
Brand’s legal team informed a New York court preparing to hear sexual assault allegations against him in a civil case that he fears criminal charges in the U.S.
In 2023, a woman in New York identified as “Jane Doe” in New York sued Brand. She worked as an extra on the Warner Bros 2010 romantic comedy “Arthur.” In the lawsuit, she claims Brand exposed himself and later sexually assaulted her in a bathroom on set.
Warner Bros. is also named in the lawsuit. The company has agreed to release up to eight hours of outtakes from the film as part of the case.
Both Brand and Warner Bros deny the allegations.
According to The Times, Brand’s lawyers asked to delay the U.S. civil case. They argued that overlapping proceedings with the criminal case in Britain could lead him to “incriminate” himself.
Russell Brand responds
In his social media video, Brand told followers he was once a “drug addict” and a “sex addict,” but that he has since changed. He said he now lives “in the light of the Lord” and denied all allegations of non-consensual behavior.
The Russell Brand charges in the U.K. are part of an ongoing investigation. London police are encouraging anyone who may have been affected to come forward.
