A group of New York House Republicans are introducing a resolution to expel Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., from the House of Representatives after the freshmen congressman was indicted on 10 new federal charges. The sponsors of the resolution are calling Santos a fraudster.

“After the latest indictment, I think it’s clear that he’s not fit to serve in the House of Representatives. He’s a stain on the institution and that’s why the New York freshmen have come together. He’s also a stain on our state,” Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, R-N.Y., told reporters.

“He has no business being in the halls of the House of Representatives,” Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., said. “He’s an immoral person. He’s an untrustworthy person. He scammed hundreds of thousands of voters, hundreds of donors. He’s stolen millions of dollars. This is the most provable case of election fraud that we have before us. He is a fraudster. He defrauded Long Island voters. He should be out of Congress right away.”

The resolution will need a two-thirds majority to be approved.

Santos faces a total of 23 charges in federal court. There’s currently a status conference scheduled before the judge on Oct. 27. Nine of the new charges carry a maximum 20 year prison sentence.

Santos’ new charges include

  • One count of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States.
  • Two counts of wire fraud.
  • Two counts of making materially false statements to the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
  • Two counts of falsification of records submitted to the FEC.
  • Two counts of aggravated identity theft.
  • One count of access device fraud.

The congressman maintained his innocence and his intent to remain in his position.

“They just want to silence the people of the 3rd Congressional District,” Santos said in part.

The new charges came shortly after Santos’ campaign treasurer Nancy Marks confessed to a conspiracy to falsely inflate the campaign’s fundraising numbers.
