A New York high school girls’ basketball coach’s reaction to a state championship loss has gained national attention.
On an NFHS Network’s online stream of Northville’s game against La Fargeville Friday, March 22, coach Jim Zullo was seen pulling the hair of senior Hailey Monroe as the team waited for the medal presentation.
Zullo told a local ABC affiliate that Monroe had cursed at him after he instructed her to shake hands with the opposing team following the game.
The Northville Central School District issued a statement saying it was aware of the incident and is taking it very seriously. “This individual will no longer be coaching for the Northville Central School District,” the statement said.
Zullo, who has been involved in New York high school basketball for over four decades, recorded more than 500 wins during his career. He retired in 1999 but returned to coaching in 2023 with the Northville High School girls’ basketball team.
