Russia seizes Chernobyl, stoking radiation levels, nuclear fears

Ukraine recorded increased radiation levels from the defunct Chernobyl nuclear power plant one day after the site was taken by Russian forces. Officials say the increased readings were the result of military activity causing radioactive dust to rise into the air.

“Radiation starts to increase. It is not critical for Kyiv for the time being, but we are monitoring,” the interior ministry said.

The former power plant was captured by Russian forces following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Chernobyl is less than 10 miles from Ukraine’s border with Belarus, a Russian ally where Moscow has been massing troops in preparation for its attack. From there, it’s a relatively straight shot of about 80 miles south to Kyiv.

RADIATION, SICKNESS, AND DEATH
IT’S THE SITE OF THE WORLD’S WORST NUCLEAR DISASTER IN HISTORY

THE CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN NORTHERN UKRAINE

NOW THE RUSSIANS HAVE TAKEN CONTROL OF IT AS THEY INVADE

“AS OF NOW, THE CHERNOBYL ZONE AND ALL THE STRUCTURES OF THE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT ARE UNDER CONTROL OF THE RUSSIAN ARMED GROUPS”

SOURCES TELLING REUTERS RUSSIA WANTS CONTROL IN ORDER TO GET NATO TO BACK OFF.

UKRAINE’S PRESIDENT CALLS IT A DECLARATION OF WAR AGAINST ALL OF EUROPE

THE CHERNOBYL DISASTER HAPPENED IN 1986 WHEN A FLAWED REACTOR COUPLED WITH PEOPLE WHO DIDN’T REALLY KNOW HOW TO DO THEIR JOBS – RESULTED IN AN EXPLOSION

THAT SENT RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL INTO THE AIR AND ENTIRE CITIES HAD TO BE EVACUATED

TO THIS DAY THERE’S AN EXCLUSION ZONE BECAUSE THE AREA REMAINS RADIOACTIVE. AND IT COULD BE THAT WAY FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS.

BUT NOW RADIATION LEVELS ARE REPORTEDLY HIGHER THAN USUAL SINCE RUSSIA TOOK OVER.
