MAHMOUD BENNETT: A SCHOOL BOARD IN NORTH DAKOTA IS NIXING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE FROM ITS MEETINGS
THE FARGO SCHOOL BOARD VOTED 7-2 TO STOP RECITING IT AT BI WEEKLY GATHERINGS – RULING IT DOESN’T ALIGN WITH THEIR DIVERSITY CODE
IT’S ALL OVER THE WORD GOD* – THE BOARD ARGUING THAT BECAUSE THE WORD IS CAPITALIZED – ITS EXCLUSIONARY AND DOESN’T INCLUDE ALL FAITH GROUPS
*THOSE WHO DISAGREE SAY THAT’S A TOTAL MISINTERPRETATION*
THIS CONTROVERSY IS NOT NEW – IN FACT THE WORDS UNDER GOD HAVE BEEN AT THE CENTER OF SEVERAL LAWSUITS
THE ORIGINAL PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE WAS WRITTEN IN 1892 BY FRANCIS BELLAMY TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS ARRIVING IN THE AMERICAS
WITH A FEW TWEAKS IT WAS FORMALLY ADOPTED BY CONGRESS IN 1942
IT WASN’T UNTIL 1954 UNDER PRESIDENT EISENHOWER THAT THE WORDS ‘UNDER GOD’ WERE ADDED – THAT’S AROUND THE SAME TIME “IN GOD WE TRUST” BECAME THE OFFICIAL U.S. MOTTO
AND WHILE OPPONENTS HAVE TRIED TO MAKE THE CASE FOR THE PHRASE BEING A VIOLATION OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT – THE SUPREME COURT HAS UPHELD IT
ON THE FLIP SIDE -COURTS HAVE ALSO RULED THAT NO SCHOOL OR GOVERNMENT CAN COMPEL SOMEONE TO RECITE THE PLEDGE OR SALUTE THE FLAG
