Nissan recalls 800,000 SUVs due to key defect

Nissan is recalling 809,000 small SUVs because a defect could cause the ignition to shut off while the vehicles are being driven. The recall covers certain Rogues from the 2014 through 2020 model years. The recall also affects Rogue Sports from 2017 through 2022.

Nissan says the SUVs have jackknife folding keys that may not stay fully open. If driven with the key partially folded, a driver could touch the fob, inadvertently turning off the engine. This can cause issues with engine power and power brakes. The defect can also cause air bags not to inflate during a crash.

The company says it is not aware of any crashes or injuries caused by the problem. Nissan hasn’t come up with a fix for it yet. It is telling car owners that are impacted by the recall to expect a letter when dealerships are ready to make the repair.

This is the second major recall from Nissan this month. The company announced a recall on more than 463,000 older vehicles because the emblem on the steering wheel could come loose when the airbag is deployed and injure drivers.
