Morning rundown: Russia’s retaliation, Trump’s Facebook reinstated

Former President Donald Trump will be reinstated to Facebook; autism rates in children triple; Russia retaliates after the West agrees to tanks; and an asteroid will zoom past earth this evening. These stories and more highlight your daily rundown for Thursday morning, Jan. 26, 2023.

Russia responds to West sending tanks

Russia has hit Ukraine again this morning, battering the capital and its energy infrastructure and forcing Ukrainian officials to shut off power in several regions of the country. One person was killed in the wave of new missile and drone attacks.

The move from Russia comes one day after the U.S. promised to send dozens of battle tanks into the region.

Russia called out Washington soon after the announcement, saying the U.S. is directly involved in their conflict.

Meta reinstates Trump’s Facebook

Facebook’s parent company Meta says it will be restoring former President Trump’s social media accounts. He’ll be allowed back on Facebook and Instagram within the coming weeks.

Meta said they have “new guard-rails in place” for the former president’s return. They say any repeat offenses can kick him back off the platform for anywhere between two weeks and two years.

Footage of Paul Pelosi attack to be released

Footage of the attack on former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband will be released to the public. A judge has denied a request from prosecutors to keep it secret. News organizations asked for copies of the evidence, but the San Francisco District Attorney’s office refused to release the video.

The judge, who sided with the news outlets, said there was no reason to keep the footage secret. News agencies asked to see the footage for transparency.

South Dakota to prosecute over abortion pills

Gov. Christi Noem, R, and South Dakota’s attorney general said this week they “will prosecute pharmacists” who fill orders for abortion pills. The state has strict abortion laws that ban the procedure in all cases unless it’s to save the life of the mother.

South Dakota officials sent a letter to pharmacists in their state warning they are “subject to felony prosecution” if they break the law.

The director of the South Dakota Pharmacists Association says they are not aware of any pharmacies with plans to dispense abortion pills.

Study examined spike in children with autism

A new report from the Journal of Pediatrics found autism rates have spiked tremendously in less than two decades. In some states, like New York and New Jersey, autism rates tripled in children from 2000 to 2016.

But it fits the national trend as well. In the year 2000, one in every 150 children were diagnosed with autism. In 2016, one in every 54 children were autistic.

The dramatic rise has some doctors questioning whether autism is more common or if health-care professionals are better at diagnosing autism.

Asteroid coming close to earth

An asteroid will be zooming past earth today in one of the closest-such encounters ever recorded. The asteroid is about the size of a delivery truck.

And while it’s going to be a close-call, NASA says it will be a near miss with no chance of the asteroid hitting earth. But even if the space rock defied the odds and entered our atmosphere, scientists say it would burn up, break off, and fall as pretty meteorites.

KARAH RUCKER: HEADLINES WE’RE FOLLOWING THIS MORNING: PRESIDENT TRUMP WILL BE REINSTATED TO FACEBOOK; AUTISM RATES IN CHILDREN TRIPLE; AND AN ASTEROID WILL ZOOM PAST EARTH THIS EVENING IN ONE OF THE CLOSEST ENCOUNTERS EVER RECORDED.

BUT WE BEGIN WITH THE LATEST OUT OF UKRAINE. THIS IS STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS. UNBIASED. STRAIGHT FACTS.

RUSSIA RESPONDS TO US SENDING TANKS

META REINSTATES TRUMP’S FACEBOOK

FACEBOOK’S PARENT COMPANY META SAYS IT WILL BE RESTORING FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS. HE’LL BE ALLOWED BACK ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM WITHIN THE COMING WEEKS.

IN NOVEMBER, ELON MUSK LIFTED THE TWITTER BAN ON TRUMP BUT THE FORMER PRESIDENT HASN’T SENT A TWEET YET…BUT IS REGULARLY POSTING TO TRUTH SOCIAL.

META SAID THEY HAVE “NEW GUARD-RAILS IN PLACE” FOR THE FORMER PRESIDENT’S RETURN AND SAY ANY REPEAT OFFENSES CAN KICK HIM BACK OFF THE PLATFORM FOR ANYWHERE BETWEEN TWO WEEKS AND TWO YEARS.

FOOTAGE OF PAUL PELOSI ATTACK TO BE RELEASED

FOOTAGE OF THE ATTACK ON FORMER U.S. HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI’S HUSBAND WILL BE RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC AFTER A JUDGE DENIED A REQUEST FROM PROSECUTORS TO KEEP IT SECRET.

IT WAS NEWS ORGANIZATIONS ASKING FOR COPIES OF THAT EVIDENCE THAT THE SAN FRANCISCO DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE REFUSED TO RELEASE.

THE JUDGE WHO SIDED WITH THE NEWS OUTLETS SAID THERE WAS NO REASON TO KEEP THE FOOTAGE SECRET  NEWS AGENCIES ASKED TO SEE THE FOOTAGE FOR TRANSPARENCY.

SD TO PROSECUTE OVER ABORTION PILLS

SOUTH DAKOTA’S GOVERNOR CHRISTI NOEM AND THE STATE’S ATTORNEY GENERAL SAID THIS WEEK THEY “WILL PROSECUTE PHARMACISTS” WHO FILL ORDERS FOR ABORTION PILLS.

THE STATE HAS STRICT ABORTION LAWS…BANNING THE PROCEDURE IN ALL CASES UNLESS ITS TO SAVE THE LIFE OF THE MOTHER.

BUT THE FDA RECENTLY PAVED WAY FOR MORE RETAIL PHARMACIES TO DISPENSE ABORTION PILLS. A CONFLICT OF WHAT A FEDERAL AGENCY SAYS IS OKAY AND WHAT A STATE LAW SAYS IS ILLEGAL.

NEW THIS MORNING, A REPORT FROM THE JOURNAL OF PEDIATRICS FOUND AUTISM RATES HAVE SPIKED TREMENDOUSLY IN LESS THAN TWO DECADES.

IN SOME STATES, LIKE NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY, AUSTIM RATES TRIPLED IN CHILDREN FROM 2000 TO 2016.

BUT IT FITS THE NATIONAL TREND AS WELL. IN THE YEAR 2000, ONE IN EVERY 150 CHILDREN WERE DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM. IN 2016, ONE IN EVERY 54 CHILDREN WERE AUTISTIC.

THE DRAMATIC RISE HAS SOME DOCTORS NOW QUESTIONING WHETHER AUTISM IS MORE COMMON NOWADAYS OR IF HEALTH-CARE PROFESSIONALS ARE BETTER AT DIAGNOSIS.

ASTEROID COMING EXCEEDINGLY CLOSE TO EARTH

AN ASTEROID WILL BE ZOOMING PAST EARTH TODAY IN ONE OF THE CLOSEST-SUCH ENCOUNTERS EVER RECORDED.

THE ASTEROID IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A DELIVERY TRUCK AND WHILE IT’S GOING TO BE A CLOSE-CALL, NASA SAYS IT WILL BE A NEAR MISS WITH NO CHANCE OF THE ASTEROID HITTING EARTH.

BUT EVEN IF THE SPACE ROCK SOMEHOW DEFIES THE ODDS AND ENTERS OUR ATMOSPHERE, SCIENTISTS SAY IT WOULD BURN UP, BREAK OFF, AND FALL AS PRETTY METEORITES.

SO, EARTH SEEMS TO HAVE LIVED ANOTHER DAY.

THESE ARE YOUR TOP HEADLINES ON THIS THURSDAY MORNING. THANKS FOR WATCHING THE DAILY RUNDOWN WITH STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS. WE’RE ON A MISSION TO BRING BACK TRUSTWORTHY JOURNALISM BY ONLY SERVING YOU — NOT AN AGENDA.
