International relief organization opens emergency field hospital in Lviv, Ukraine

LVIV, Ukraine — Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization, has established an emergency field hospital beneath a shopping center on the outskirts of Lviv, Ukraine. It is now accepting its first patients.

The field hospital has two operating rooms with capacity for 14 major surgeries or 30 minor surgeries per day. There are nearly 60 total inpatient beds, including four intensive care unit beds and four step-down beds. The emergency room can handle 100 patients per day. The facility also has a pharmacy and its own water and sanitation system.

“We prepare for anything but this is war, plain and simple…any kind of traumatic injury, that’s what we’re prepared to see,” said Dr. Elliott Tenpenny, Emergency Medical Response Manager of the International Disaster Response Unit at Samaritan’s Purse.

Samaritan’s Purse is also working in Moldova and Poland to meet emergency needs as Ukrainian refugees cross the border. Disaster response specialists are distributing food, drinking water, hygiene kits and other critical supplies.
