Long overdue: If some towns are paying Blacks slavery reparations, why can’t Congress?


Amherst, Massachusetts voted to establish a fund to pay Blacks slavery reparations. The decision reflects one of several different types of reparations being implemented across the country.

OPPONENTS LIKE REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE BURGESS OWENS SAYS IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. BURGESS SAYS, “IT IS IMPRACTICAL AND A NON STARTER FOR THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO PAY REPARATIONS.”

AS YOU MAKE UP YOU OWN MIND, IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW SOME OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SLAVERY REPARATIONS BEING IMPLEMENTED ACROSS THE COUNTRY. 

IN EVANSTON, ILLINOIS, SLAVERY REPARATIONS ARE BEING MADE THROUGH A HOUSING PROGRAM. 

BLACK RESIDENTS WHO QUALIFY WILL RECEIVE GRANTS UP TO 25-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO PURCHASE A HOME, MAKE HOME IMPROVEMENTS, AND PAY DOWN A MORTGAGE.

IN WASHINGTON D-C, THE JESUITS ARE MAKING AMENDS FOR SELLING 272 BLACK PEOPLE TO SLAVE OWNERS. IT TOOK PLACE IN LOUISIANA IN 18-38.

THE JESUITS PLEDGED TO RAISE 100-MILLION DOLLARS TO ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT DESCENDANTS OF PEOPLE ENSLAVED.

STUDENTS AT BROWN UNIVERSITY OVERWHELMINGLY VOTED IN SUPPORT OF REPARATIONS FOR DESCENDANTS OF SLAVES ONCE OWNED BY THE BROWN FAMILY CENTURIES AGO. 

IN AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS, THE TOWN COUNCIL SIGNED THIS RESOLUTION PROMISING TO TAKE STEPS TO END STRUCTURAL RACISM AND ACHIEVE RACIAL EQUITY FOR BLACK RESIDENTS.

ALSO, IN THE GOLDEN STATE OF CALIFORNIA, GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM SIGNED A BILL TO FORM THE FIRST OF IT’S KIND COMMISSION TO STUDY REPARATIONS AT THE STATE LEVEL. 

THESE ARE FIVE DIFFERENT SLAVERY REPARATIONS HAPPENING ACROSS THE COUNTRY TODAY.
