Jack Black announced that “all future creative plans are on hold” with his on-stage partner, Kyle Gass, following comments Gass made regarding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The incident occurred when the duo’s band, Tenacious D, was performing a concert in Sydney, Australia, Sunday, July 14
During the performance, Black brought out a birthday cake for Gass. When prompted to “make a wish” by Black, Gass said, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” and blew out the cake’s candles.
Black and Gass faced severe backlash, leading to widespread condemnation on social media. Australian Sen. Ralph Babet called for Tenacious D to be deported immediately, stating the comment was not a joke and was “deadly serious.”
In a statement on Instagram, Black said he was “blindsided” by Gass’ comment. Gass issued a public apology, acknowledging his “highly inappropriate, dangerous and terrible mistake.”
Black and Gass formed the rock-comedy, Grammy Award-winning band in Los Angeles in 1994. The duo had planned several more shows in Australia and New Zealand before heading back to the United States for additional performances.
It’s unclear how Black and Gass will move forward creatively.
