U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released recent arrest numbers of suspected immigrants illegally in the U.S. The agency said it made 32,809 migrant arrests between Jan. 20 and March 10.
The new data was collected during the first 50 days of President Donald Trump’s new administration. These figures would nearly match the Biden administration’s 33,300 arrests for all of fiscal 2024.
What is the breakdown of the number of arrests?
Of those arrested, ICE said 14,111 are convicted criminals, 9,980 have pending criminal charges and at least 8,000 have immigration violations, for being in the United States illegally.
What does ICE allege that the Biden administration did?
ICE, along with the Department of Homeland Security, said a review of their records found the Biden administration “cooked the books,” and “falsely inflated ICE arrest data.” They also claim the previous administration purposely misled the American public.
Officials claim Biden did this by categorizing some migrants as “arrests.” They said the Biden administration would process those migrants and then release them into the public.
ICE states that it is now trying to locate those who were released. Officials said those released include thousands of violent criminals and gang members.
On a conference call with reporters, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said their core mission is to arrest people who violate immigration laws and the culture is changing to one of action and accountability.
What is the current status of detainees?
“Border czar” Tom Homan told Fox Business that ICE currently has 46,000 people detained and they are running out of beds. He said Homeland Security is in dire need of funding from Congress.
