Nearly 30 years after the original show became a cult classic, the reboot is bringing in major names. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is set to helm the project. Meanwhile, Sarah Michelle Gellar is expected to return — not as Buffy Summers, but as an executive producer.
Dolly Parton’s role in the ‘Buffy’ reboot
Another familiar name attached to the project is Dolly Parton. Many fans don’t realize she was an uncredited producer on the original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series and the 1992 film that inspired it.
In a 2023 Business Insider interview, Parton shared that she was involved with the show but never visited the set. She was based in Nashville, while production took place in Los Angeles. She also revealed that she never met the cast.
Parton is no stranger to the entertainment world beyond music. She has produced several TV movies, including “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” in 2015. Her 2020 Netflix film, “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square,” won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.
Joss Whedon not involved in ‘Buffy’ reboot
The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot will continue without its original creator, Joss Whedon.
In 2020, “Justice League” actor Ray Fisher accused Whedon of abusive and unprofessional behavior during the film’s reshoots. The following year, “Buffy” star Charisma Carpenter spoke out in a Vanity Fair interview about his alleged misconduct. She accused him of bullying her over her pregnancy and retaliating against her.
Other cast members, including Amber Benson and Michelle Trachtenberg, supported her claims. Given these allegations, Whedon will not be involved in the reboot.
It remains unclear if any other original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” cast members will reprise their roles.
However, with Hulu leading the reboot and big names attached, the project is already generating major buzz.
