NEW YORK’S GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES ITS TIME TO MAKE THE CITY’S TRANSIT SYSTEM SAFER.
KATHY HOCHUL WANTS TO EXPAND INVOLUNTARY MENTAL HEALTH COMMITMENTS IN 2025.
A DECISION SHE SAYS WAS MADE CLEAR AMID THE RECENT STRING OF VIOLENT SUBWAY ATTACKS.
JUST THIS WEEK A MAN WAS PUSHED ONTO TRACKS…OR LAST MONTH WHEN A WOMAN WAS SET ON FIRE ON A CONEY ISLAND TRAIN.
SHE SAYS THESE RECENT EVENTS INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS WHO HAD SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS AND FAILED TO GET TREATMENT.
HOCHUL PLANS TO USE HER EXECUTIVE BUDGET TO ADDRESS THE LACK OF HELP AVAILABLE TO NEW YORKERS IN CRISIS.
(We need to ensure that those who are suffering from severe mental illness are getting the care they need.” )
CURRENT NEW YORK LAW ALLOWS HOSPITALS TO INVOLUNTARILY HOLD A PERSON IF THEY’RE BELIEVED TO BE A DANGER TO THEMSELVES OR OTHERS.
ONCE ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL, TWO DOCTORS MUST EVALUATE A PATIENT AND DETERMINE IF THEY POSE A THREAT–HOLDING A PERSON FOR UP TO SIXTY DAYS.
POLICE OFFICERS AND OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONALS CAN ALSO COMMIT PEOPLE FOR TREATMENT.
HOCHUL’S PROPOSAL WOULD USE ONE BILLION DOLLARS TO ENHANCE CARE AND EXPAND CURRENT LAWS–INCLUDING KENDRA’S LAW… WHICH MANDATES COURT ORDERED OUT PATIENT CARE FOR INDIVIDUALS STRUGGLING WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES.
IN HER ANNOUNCEMENT, SHE NOTES PREVIOUS FAILED ATTEMPTS WHERE THE LEGISLATURE REJECTED HER EFFORTS TO EXPAND ACCESS TO RESOURCES.
(“It is my sincere hope that everyone in the legislature is paying attention to what is unfolding in our city and in our state.” )
NEW YORK CITY MAYOR ERIC ADAMS BACKS UP HOCHUL…HE SAYS SHE IS LISTENING TO THEIR CALLS TO ENHANCE LIFE SAVING PSYCHIATRIC CARE WITHIN THE BIG APPLE.
LIKE HOCHUL, HE SAYS THE HOMELESS POPULATION ADDS TO THE VIOLENT STATISTICS BECAUSE MANY ARE LACKING BASIC NEEDS THAT LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC CHOICES.
THE NEW YORK CIVIL LIBERTIES SAYS HOCHUL’S PATH ISN’T THE RIGHT ONE TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
IN A STATEMENT THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SAYS THE CYCLE REPEATS ITSELF BECAUSE ““The current system already fails those subject to involuntary commitment. They are bounced from one under-resourced facility after another before returning to the street.”
A NEW YORK CITY COUNCILMEMBER AGREES, SAYING CURRENT LAW ISN’T THE ISSUE AND IN MANY CASES ITS NOT EVEN USED.
LAWMAKERS SAY THEY ARE OPEN TO NEW LEGISLATION AND ITS ALL IN THE LANGUAGE OF THE BILL BUT THEY WANT MORE TO BE DONE TO PROTECT THE SAFETY OF THE CITY.
