GOOGLE IS ENTERING INTO WHAT IT CALLS A FIRST OF ITS KIND PARTNERSHIP-
A BRING YOUR OWN ENERGY APPROACH TO ITS DATA CENTER EXPANSION.
THE TECH GIANT HAS A 20 BILLION DOLLAR PLAN TO DEVELOP A SERIES OF INDUSTRIAL PARKS ACROSS THE U.S.
POWERED BY ON-SITE WIND AND SOLAR ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE, THE SITES WOULD HOUSE GOOGLE’S DATA CENTER OPERATIONS.
ENERGY COMPANY INTERSECT POWER HAS BEEN BROUGHT ON TO HELP DEVELOP THESE PROJECTS-
THE FIRST OF WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BE PARTIALLY OPERATIONAL BY 2026 AND COMPLETED BY 2027.
GOOGLE HOPES THAT SUPPLYING ITS DATA CENTERS DIRECTLY WITH RENEWABLES WILL HELP BYPASS LARGE AMOUNTS POLLUTION-
OFTEN CREATED WHEN THESE TYPES OF FACILITIES AND THEIR MASSIVE ENERGY REQUIREMENTS ARE CONNECTED TO THE POWER GRID.
THIS ARRANGEMENT WILL ALSO TAKE SOME PRESSURE OFF ELECTRICAL UTILITIES.
NOW THEY WON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR NEW INFRASTRUCTURE TO ACCOMMODATE THE DATA CENTER-
THAT MIGHT OTHERWISE HAVE LED TO HIGHER UTILITY BILLS FOR CUSTOMERS IN THE AREA.
HOWEVER, THIS PLAN STILL FACES CHALLENGES.
INTERSECT POWER HAS TO RAISE MILLIONS IN FUNDS BEFORE THE COMPANY CAN HOLD UP ITS END OF THE DEAL AND BUILD OUT THE NECESSARY RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANTS.
ADDITIONALLY, THESE FACILITIES, WHILE NOT RELIANT ON ENERGY FROM THE GRID, WILL HAVE TO CONNECT TO IT REGARDLESS FOR USE AS A BACKUP SUPPLY OF POWER-
A PROCESS WHICH CAN REQUIRE YEARS OF REGULATORY APPROVAL.
