Full story

Georgia’s closely-watched Senate race will go to a runoff on Dec. 6. Georgia voters will have to go to the polls one more time after neither Sen. Raphael Warnock, D, nor Herschel Walker, R, got 50% of the vote.

This race has long been viewed as crucial to determining control of the Senate. When Warnock and fellow Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff, D, swept the January 2021 special election, they flipped the balance of power from what would have been 52-48 Republicans to 50-50. When necessary, Vice President Harris can cast the tie-breaking vote.

The contest got personal when two women accused Walker of pressuring them to get an abortion and paying for it. Walker fully denied the accusations.

Warnock criticized Walker, saying his opponent is a liar and unqualified.

“Herschel Walker is not ready. This is a man who lies about the most basic facts of his life,” Sen. Warnock said during a recent campaign event with former President Barack Obama.

But Walker said he was not backing down.

“I’m the wrong Georgian for them to come after. They can keep coming. I’m going to keep knocking them down. I told them when I got in this race I’m that warrior for God that needs to straighten things out because what they’re doing to this country is not right,” Walker said on “Fox and Friends.”

The accusers said Walker was a hypocrite by paying for their abortions but running on a pro-life message. Walker said he supports Georgia’s abortion law that bans the procedure after six weeks but makes exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Because of the importance of the race, the candidates received extraordinary help from the biggest names in their party. Walker was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and also received help from establishment Republicans like Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell. Warnock held rallies with former President Obama and celebrities like Lin-Manuel Miranda.
