POWELL’S FAMILY SAID THE 84-YEAR-OLD DIED THIS MORNING DUE TO COMPLICATIONS FROM COVID. HE WAS FULLY VACCINATED.
POWELL WAS A FOREIGN POLICY POWERHOUSE WHO SERVED FOUR PRESIDENTS.
HIS SERVICE TO AMERICA STARTED DURING COMBAT DUTY IN THE VIETNAM WAR.
FROM THERE, POWELL SERVED AS NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR TO PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN, THE FIRST BLACK PERSON TO HOLD THE ROLE.
POWELL ALSO SERVED UNDER GEORGE H.W. BUSH AS THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF AND
LATER UNDER HIS SON, PRESIDENT GEORGE W BUSH AS SECRETARY OF STATE.
POWELL’S FAMILY MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS PASSING ON FACEBOOK, SAYING “WE HAVE LOST A REMARKABLE AND LOVING HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER AND A GREAT AMERICAN.”
IN THE HOURS SINCE THE NEWS BROKE- TRIBUTES HAVE POURED IN.
PRESIDENT BUSH SAYING “LAURA AND I ARE DEEPLY SADDENED BY THE DEATH OF COLIN POWELL. HE WAS A GREAT PUBLIC SERVANT…HE WAS SUCH A FAVORITE OF PRESIDENTS THAT HE EARNED THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM – TWICE. HE WAS HIGHLY RESPECTED AT HOME AND ABROAD. AND MOST IMPORTANT, COLIN WAS A FAMILY MAN AND A FRIEND.”
