DNC to launch campaign targeting Republican stance on abortion

The Democratic National Committee is preparing to launch a digital ad campaign Tuesday targeting abortion rights after the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The DNC says the Republican party is looking to outlaw abortion on the national scale.

According to Pew Research Center, a recent poll points to 60 percent of Republican voters saying abortion should be illegal in all or most cases. The ad specifically pictures Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on the advertisement. However, McConnell recently stated the issue will stay at the state level. McConnell said abortion rights might be a factor in local and state races during the midterm election since it is now a state issue, not a federal one.

“I think it will be certainly heavily debated in state legislative and governor’s races because the court will have, in effect, returned this issue to the political process. My guess is in terms of the impact on federal races, I think it’s probably going to be a wash,” McConnell said.

President Biden said that sentiment is not a guarantee. He encouraged voters to think about the issue ahead of visiting polls in November.

“The choice is clear,” President Biden said. “We either elect federal senators and representatives who will codify Roe or Republicans who will elect the House and Senate, who will try to ban abortions nationwide, nationwide. This is going to go one way or the other after November.”

Will the DNC strategy of the ad campaign targeting abortion rights work? A CBS YouGov Poll shows 52 percent of voters disagreed with the Supreme Court’s Dobbs ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade. But the issue mattering enough to change someone’s vote is unlikely, according to the latest New York Times poll published Monday.

Five percent of voters polled rated abortion as the most important issue in America today. The economy and inflation were the top issues among voters polled.
