There’s a New plan to deal with the surge of illegal immigration at the southern border. DHS outlined a strategy for the end of title 42, the pandemic-era health order that allows homeland security to send migrants back to Mexico.
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas wrote “we anticipate migration levels will increase, as smugglers will seek to take advantage of and profit from vulnerable migrants.”
Under the plan CBP will increase its detention capacity from 13,000 to 18,000, Increase the use of Expedited Removal, Target human smugglers, an effort that has already led to 2,500 arrests, And they signed migration agreements with Costa Rica and Panama.
Mayorkas wrote: “Many elements of this plan are already being implemented as we manage a historic number of encounters, including a record number of noncitizens trying to enter the United States multiple times.”
Congressional Republicans took a recent trip to the border where they expressed frustration with the Biden administration’s decision to end title 42, saying 7,000 people already cross every day.
Kevin McCarthy says “that number will more than double, go to 18,000. If it’s unsustainable today, what will it look like a month from now?”
A growing number of congressional democrats are also asking the President to delay rescinding title 42. It was scheduled to end May 23rd. The Biden administration on Tuesday agreed to comply with a judge’s order to temporarily block ending the health measure. Straight from DC, I’m Ray Bogan.
