December wipeout? What cargo ships stuck at sea mean for Christmas shopping.


A logjam of cargo ships outside Southern California’s sea ports is threatening the holiday shopping season. The port complexes at Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, handle about 40% of all U.S. container imports. But in a traffic jam of epic proportions, dozens of container ships are stuck at sea, forced to wait more than a week to dock and unload. The bottleneck at America’s busiest port complex means Santa could be late delivering Christmas presents this year.

“It’s going to be a big issue as the holiday season progresses,” said Patrick Penfield, a professor of supply chain practice at Syracuse University.

Penfield said problems throughout the global supply chain could mean bare shelves for the holidays. COVID-19 outbreaks at Asia’s ports, transpacific congestion and a trucker shortage are all speed bumps for getting toys, electronics and more into stores in time for the busiest shopping season of the year.

Consumer demand for imports is surging and so are prices. According to the freight-tracking firm Freightos, one 40-foot container now costs about $20,000 to ship from China to the U.S., four times what it cost just one year ago.

It’s also now taking 73 days to get product to its final destination, nearly double the time it took before the pandemic.

Some big box stores, like Costco, Walmart and Home Depot, are chartering their own ships to try to cut down on costs and delays. It’s a luxury smaller retailers can’t afford.

Experts are warning consumers to expect higher prices and less volume this holiday season. Penfield said the best bet is to do holiday shopping early, before stock runs out. He also suggested buying gift cards.

“I do think there’ll be a lot of good sales in January and February once the freighters, the whole bottleneck gets hopefully undone,” he said.
