Gas stoves have been a growing source of debate among U.S. politicians. Now, Americans have the opportunity to weigh in on the matter. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted to approve a request for information on the health hazards of gas stove emissions as well as the potential solutions to those hazards. While the vote doesn’t mean regulations will be put in place, it is largely seen as a potential first step toward that.

“Today marks an important milestone on the road to protecting consumers from potential hidden hazards in their homes – the emissions from gas stoves,” Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. said. “This request for information furthers our commitment to American consumers because step one in confronting a potential hazard is understanding its scope and the options for addressing it.”

Trumka was greeted with outrage when he floated the idea of a gas stove ban last month. Within days, Trumka clarified that the agency had no plans to halt their use. The White House also issued a statement that said President Biden did not support banning gas stoves either. Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers have expressed skepticism and introduced legislation that would stop any potential ban on gas stoves.

“From the start, the Biden administration has not been honest with the American people about its desire to ban gas stoves,” Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich., said. “That is why I introduced the STOVE Act to stop any potential ban. Bureaucratic attempts to ban gas stoves in the United States would present an obvious and unreasonable burden on American families and businesses.”
