[JACK AYLMER]
A SURGE OF SOLAR POWER IS COMING TO THE WEST.
IN THE COMING MONTHS – EFFORTS TO INSTALL MORE SUSTAINABLE ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE IN STATES LIKE WYOMING, ARIZONA AND CALIFORNIA ARE GETTING UNDERWAY.
AND ONE FARM PROPOSED IN THE COWBOY STATE WOULD BE AROUND THE SIZE OF FOUR-THOUSAND FOOTBALL FIELDS.
EVEN THOUGH THE EFFORT PROMISES TO POWER THOUSANDS OF HOMES – LOCALS MAY NOT BE REAPING THE BENEFITS AND ENVIRONMENTALISTS ARE RAISING CONCERNS.
THAT’S PARTLY BECAUSE IN ORDER TO MAKE THE ONE-POINT-TWO BILLION DOLLAR PROJECT A REALITY – NATURAL GRASS AND FARM LAND WILL HAVE TO BE CARVED UP.
THE COMPANY BEHIND THE PROJECT HAS ALREADY BEGUN BUYING UP LAND FROM FARMS– HOPING TO BEGIN CONSTRUCTION ON THE SOLAR FARM NEXT SPRING.
THE NECESSARY CONSTRUCTION WORK IS SOMETHING ENVIRONMENTALISTS SAY COULD DISRUPT MIGRATION PATHS.
THEY FEAR THE LAND-GRAB IN WYOMING COULD LEAD TO A DOMINO EFFECT WITH OTHER COMPANIES LOOKING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TAX CREDITS OFFERED BY THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO DEVELOP RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE STATE.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF MORE SOLAR PROJECTS IN WYOMING IS PART OF BIDEN’S “WESTERN SOLAR PLAN.”
THE PLAN INVOLVES MORE THAN HALF A DOZEN WESTERN STATES.
THE LOCAL COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS STILL NEEDS TO APPROVE THE PLAN.
WYOMING’S DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY APPROVED THE PROJECT IN MARCH BUT SET SOME PARAMETERS.
29 CONDITIONS THE COMPANY MUST MEET BEFORE WORK CAN BEGIN.
STILL- THE ENERGY COMPANY’S APPLICATION DESIGNATES POWER FROM THE SOLAR FARM WILL GO TO CORPORATE CUSTOMERS, NOT HOMEOWNERS.
THIS RELATES TO A LARGER ISSUE WE’VE TALKED ABOUT AT STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS – THE MASSIVE ENERGY DEMAND FROM DATA CENTERS.
SOME WHO LIVE ON THE LAND ARE SPEAKING OUT SAYING THE BEAUTY OF THEIR STATE IS IN JEOPARDY.
LANDOWNER ED PROSSER SAID:
“MY CONCERN IS THAT THE GRAZING LAND WILL NOW BE CONVERTED TO INDUSTRIAL, AND DURING CONSTRUCTION, HUNDREDS OF CARS WILL DRIVE OVER THESE ROADS
THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PROJECT IS SCHEDULED TO BE COMPLETED IN 20-26.
THE FARM WILL BE BUILT IN TWO STAGES– WITH EACH INCLUDING A 133 MEGAWATT BATTERY-STORAGE FACILITY.
