Congress is on track to provide more than 1 billion dollars in 2023 to reduce the backlog of structurally deficient bridges. But that’s not even close to what’s needed to fix the problem.
A report from the American Society of Civil Engineers, says there are 46,154 structurally deficient bridges in the United States that are in quote poor condition. That’s 7.5 percent of the country’s total bridges. They’re used 178 million times per day.
To fix the problem the ASCE says America would need to spend 22.7 billion dollars on repairs every year.
The worst state in the country is Rhode Island where 22 percent of bridges are in poor condition, while Texas is on top with just 1.3 percent.
The billion dollars for repairs next year is being included in the 1.7 trillion dollar Omnibus spending package Congress is currently negotiating.
Straight Arrow News did a four part series on crumbling bridges in Iowa, which has the third worst ranking for bridge construction in the country.
