Carroll, Glenn and Schottenheimer latest adds to NFL’s coaching carousel

The NFL’s coaching carousel is nearly full. The Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys introduced their new head coaches Monday, Jan. 27. Pete Carroll, Aaron Glenn and Brian Schottenheimer will be tasked with turning each franchise around, respectively.

Carroll is a future Hall of Famer who, at 74, will be the oldest coach in the NFL when the Raiders’ season kicks off. He was introduced alongside new general manager John Spytek.

Carroll has a long history of success. He won 170 games with the Seattle Seahawks, took them to the playoffs in 11 of his 14 seasons, earned two Super Bowl appearances and won it all in 2014. Before his time with the Seahawks, he had eight straight winning seasons with the University of Southern California.

For Carroll, it’s all about changing the culture in Las Vegas, beginning with the players.

“If you want to be on a great team, you need to be a great teammate, and so teaching what that’s all about and instilling that in the makeup of our program is going to be crucial,” Carroll said. “The central theme in the program is always going to be competition, and that’s where it starts.”

Aaron Glenn, the former defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, was also introduced alongside the Jets’ new general manager, Darren Mougey.

As a player, the New York Jets drafted Glenn in the first round in 1994, and he spent eight of his 15 NFL seasons in New York. As a coach, he took the Lions’ defense from 31st in the NFL to the top 10 in four seasons.

Glenn had a direct message for his new players: “To any players that’s here now, put your seat belts on and get ready for the ride. Put your seat belts on and get ready for the ride. Listen, there are going to be some challenges, but with challenges becomes opportunity –– gets opportunity. But here’s what I do know, we’re the freaking New York Jets, so we’re built for this s***.”

The Dallas Cowboys promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to the head job. The son of longtime NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer takes over for Mike McCarthy. The team did not renew McCarthy’s contract after five seasons and a single playoff win.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he was not worried about making a “splashy hire.”

“To all the fans who say maybe this wasn’t the most glamorous, I got here taking shots. Good things have happened. Let me tell you something: There’s some stuff to be had over there where not many people go. There is. Don’t think for one minute I won’t take a shot –– this was risky, this is risky.” Jones said.

The New Orleans Saints are now the only NFL team still searching for a head coach. Former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy could be on their shortlist, as could a coach from one of the two teams still playing. For instance, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore or Kansas City Chiefs defensive guru Steve Spagnuolo. If that’s the case, that last vacancy will have to wait until the day after the Super Bowl, Feb. 10, to be filled.

IT WAS INTRODUCTION DAY IN THE NFL, THREE COACHES TOOK TO THE PODIUM TO EXPRESS THEIR THANKS, EXCITEMENT AND PLANS FOR A TRIO OF TROUBLED FRANCHISES. THE LAS VEGAS RAIDERS, NEW YORK JETS AND DALLAS COWBOYS ALL INTRODUCED THEIR NEW LEADERS AS THEY LOOK TO THE 2025 SEASON.

FIRST, PETE CARROLL, THE FUTURE HALL OF FAMER WHO AT 74 WILL BE THE OLDEST COACH IN THE NFL WHEN THE SEASON KICKS OFF. HE WAS INTRODUCED ALONG WITH NEW RAIDERS GENERAL MANAGER JOHN SPYTEK. CARROLL HAS A LONG HISTORY OF SUCCESS, WINNING 170 GAMES WITH THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS AND A STRETCH OF 8 STRAIGHT WINNING SEASONS WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. HE TOOK SEATTLE TO THE PLAYOFFS IN 11 OF HIS 14 SEASONS WITH TWO SUPER BOWL APPEARANCES, WINNING IT ALL IN 2014. FOR COACH CARROLL, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CULTURE.

“IF YOU WANT TO BE ON A GREAT TEAM YOU NEED TO BE A GREAT TEAMMATE AND SO TEACHING WHAT THAT’S ALL ABOUT AND INSTILLING THAT IN THE MAKEUP OF OF OUR PROGRAM IS GOING TO BE CRUCIAL AND UH, THE CENTRAL THEME IN THE PROGRAM IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE COMPETITION AND THAT’S WHERE IT STARTS.”

NEXT UP, AARON GLENN, THE FORMER DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR FOR THE DETROIT LIONS WHO WAS ALSO INTRODUCED WITH *HIS NEW GENERAL MANAGER DARREN MOUGEY. AS A PLAYER, GLENN WAS DRAFTED BY THE NEW YORK JETS IN THE FIRST ROUND IN 1994 AND SPENT 8 OF HIS 15 NFL SEASONS IN NEW YORK. AS A COACH, HE TOOK THE LIONS DEFENSE FROM 31ST IN THE NFL TO THE TOP 10 IN FOUR SEASONS.

“TO ANY PLAYERS THAT’S HERE NOW PUT YOUR SEAT BELTS ON AND GET READY FOR THE RIDE. PUT YOUR SEAT BELTS ON AND GET READY FOR THE RIDE. LISTEN THERE ARE GOING TO BE SOME CHALLENGES BUT WITH CHALLENGES BECOMES OPPORTUNITY, GETS OPPORTUNITY BUT HERE’S WHAT I DO KNOW WE’RE THE FREAKING NEW YORK JETS, SO WE’RE BUILT FOR THIS SHIT -BEEP-”

OK, LAST BUT NOT LEAST, MAYBE A HIRE THAT WAS NOT AS FIERY. THE DALLAS COWBOYS PROMOTED OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR BRIAN SCHOTTENHEIMER TO THE HEAD JOB. THE SON OF LONGTIME NFL HEAD COACH MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER, TAKES OVER FOR MIKE MCCARTHY WHOSE CONTRACT WAS NOT RENEWED AFTER FIVE SEASONS AND JUST ONE PLAYOFF WIN. COWBOYS OWNER JERRY JONES SAYS HE WAS NOT WORRIED ABOUT MAKING A “GLAMOROUS HIRE”.

“I GOT HERE TAKING SHOTS. GOOD THINGS HAVE HAPPENED. LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING, THERE’S SOME STUFF TO BE HAD OVER THERE WHERE NOT MANY PEOPLE GO. THERE IS. DON’T THINK FOR ONE MINUTE I WON’T TAKE A SHOT, THIS WAS RISKY, THIS IS RISKY.”

RISK ASIDE, THE COACHING CAROUSEL HAS JUST ONE MORE VACANCY. THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS ARE STILL SEARCHING. MIKE MCCARTHY COULD BE ON THEIR SHORT LIST, AS COULD A COACH FROM ONE OF THE TWO TEAMS STILL PLAYING, LIKE EAGLES OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR KELLEN MOORE OR CHIEFS DEFENSIVE GURU STEVE SPAGNOULO.

IF THAT’S THE CASE, THAT LAST VACANCY WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL FEBRUARY 10TH, THE DAY AFTER THE SUPER BOWL, TO BE FILLED.
