Canned tuna recall due to risk of botulism, big name grocery stores involved

Tri-Union Seafoods of California is recalling tuna cans due to a defect that might cause the seal to leak and become contaminated with botulism. This recall is a precautionary measure and no illnesses have been reported so far.
The cans of tuna are sold at popular stores including Trader Joe’s, Walmart and Costco, among others.
The FDA has published a list of the specific cans affected, including codes, labels and best-if-used-by dates on its website.

How can somebody become infected or sick?

The company said the easy-open pull tab lid has a defect that might cause the seal to leak and possibly become contaminated with botulism. The bacteria is a potentially deadly form of food poisoning.

Has anybody become ill?

So far, no sickness has been reported in customers. However, Tri-Union is pulling tuna cans off store shelves out of an abundance of caution. Medical experts said the symptoms of the illness include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness, blurry vision, difficulty speaking and trouble breathing.

What are some of the stores where it is sold?

The tuna is sold at popular stores including Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway and Publix, among others, in 27 states. The Food and Drug Administration has published a list of the specific cans of tuna affected including codes, labels and best-if-used-by dates on its website, fda.gov.

What should I do if I have the tuna?

Customers who purchased the recalled tuna should return it to the store to get a refund or contact Tri-Union Seafoods to receive a coupon.
