The Kremlin said its air defense systems were firing near Grozny, where the plane attempted to land, to deflect a Ukrainian drone strike.

Aliyev said he now wants three things from Russia: an apology, an admission of guilt, and for the guilty to be punished, whether by being held criminally responsible or being forced to compensate Azerbaijan and the 29 surviving but injured passengers and crew members.

Aliyev also said Russian President Vladimir Putin already fulfilled the first request on Saturday, Dec. 28, when Putin apologized for what he called a “tragic incident”.

Despite Aliyev blaming Russia for the deadly incident, the investigation into what caused the crash is still ongoing.
