Attack on Ukraine kills 25, Uvalde police chief fired, Japan police chief resigns


On August 25, 2022, Ukraine is devastated from a deadly Russian attack on Wednesday, marking their independence anniversary, the Uvalde School District police chief is fired, and Japan’s police chief resigns following Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s assassination.

Deadly attack on Ukraine’s Independence Day – The death toll from Wednesday’s Russian rocket attack on a Ukrainian train station has climbed to 25. More than 30 others were injured. The attack came on Ukraine’s Independence Day from the Soviet Union as well as the semi-anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

School police chief fired for Uvalde response – The Uvalde School District fired Police Chief Pete Arredondo over the police response to the Robb Elementary School shooting. He received the brunt of the criticism for not ordering officers to act sooner. Arredondo is now the first officer to lose his job over the shooting.

Japan police chief resigns after Abe assassination – Japan’s National Police Chief Itaru Nakamura announced his resignation Thursday in response to last month‘s assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Nakamura’s resignation announcement came as the agency released a report laying out the flaws in police protection that led to the assassination.
