SONG LYRICS: let’s get physical physical
SIMONE DEL ROSARIO: OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN TOPPED THE BILLBOARD CHART.
MOVIE CLIP: he tried to pork me. pork you, what?
SIMONE DEL ROSARIO: JOHN BELUSHI AND NEIGHBORS WERE NUMBER ONE AT THE BOX OFFICE.
AND RONALD REAGAN – WAS WRAPPING UP HIS FIRST YEAR AS PRESIDENT.
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN: and what a year it’s been.
SIMONE DEL ROSARIO: IT WAS DECEMBER 1981. THE LAST TIME INFLATION WAS AS HIGH AS IT IS TODAY.
SO WHAT HAPPENED THEN?
THE COUNTRY WAS JUST COMING OUT OF “THE GREAT INFLATION” – WHERE THE ANNUAL RATE PEAKED NEAR 15%!
WHILE TODAY’S 8.5% INFLATION TRIGGERED SEEMINGLY OVERNIGHT BY COVID-CAUSED SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES AND PANDEMIC STIMULUS…
THE GREAT INFLATION WAS CAUSED BY A LONG BUILD UP OF POLICIES THAT STARTED IN THE 60S.
BUT BOTH SURGES HAVE TWO THINGS IN COMMON.HIGH GOVERNMENT SPENDING – AND EASY MONEY.
BACK THEN THE COUNTRY SPENT HEAVILY ON SOCIAL PROGRAMS AND THE VIETNAM WAR. THEN THE FED KEPT EASY MONEY FLOWING TO ACHIEVE FULL EMPLOYMENT.
BUT INFLATION PUSHED SO HIGH UP THE FED RAISED ITS INTEREST RATE NEAR 20% TO REVERSE COURSE.
THE RESULT – PEOPLE WERE PRICED OUT OF CARS AND HOMES. SEVERE RECESSION ENSUED. AND UNEMPLOYMENT EXCEEDED 10%.
FOR ALL THAT PAIN, BY MID-1983, INFLATION FINALLY DROPPED BELOW 3% FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MORE THAN A DECADE.
