Moderate Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar, the lone pro-life member of his caucus in the U.S. House, is declaring victory in his primary against challenger Jessica Cisneros. But the race is too close to call. The pair are separated by less than a half a percent.
Progressives like New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez are rallying behind Cisneros and say the Democratic establishment tipped the scale in Cuellar’s favor.
AOC tweeted: “Democratic Party leadership rallied for a pro-NRA, anti-choice incumbent under investigation in a close primary.”
Cuellar received help from the top three House democrats and thanked them for it. But is pro-life stance is also at issue.
Jessica Cisneros: “Henry Cuellar is the only one calling this race for himself. We clearly have a shot to take down the last anti-choice Democrat in Congress.”
Cuellar further explained his stance on abortion.
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX): “Personally I’m against abortion. But do I believe in an outright ban? No.”
But that’s not good enough for progressives who are hoping for a buzzer beater victory. They’re urging everyone in the district to track their mail-in ballots through the Texas Secretary of State’s office to ensure their vote is counted. Straight from DC, I’m Ray Bogan.
